5 myths of newborn photography | Bellevue Newborn Photography

I’m a Bellevue newborn photography veteran.  I’ve seen it all.  Parent’s that are just itching to get into the studio and also those who are a little more hesitant due to some bad experiences. Based on some stories I’ve heard I can totally understand the hesitation.  Not all photographers are created equal and it’s so important to me to make sure my clients know that I am a professional and take not only every safety precaution I can, but also care DEEPLY about your overall experience and anxiety level.  I’m here to help you with that.  There are several myths surrounding newborn photography that often make parents hesitant to book a session. I’m going to debunk four of the most common myths about newborn photography sessions that just don’t fly with me.

Myth #1: Baby’s need to be 2 weeks old.

Many people believe that newborn photography sessions should only take place within the first two weeks of a baby’s life. While it’s true that babies are typically sleepier and more flexible during this time, it is possible to capture beautiful newborn images within the first month of life.  In fact, waiting a little longer can sometimes result in more alert and expressive images, as babies become more aware of their surroundings and begin to develop their personalities. As a professional photographer, I have worked with babies of all ages and can attest that newborn images can be captured at any stage.  The image you see top/center of the Omaha Newborn Photographer portfolio page?  That’s a three month old…are you shocked?

Myth #2: Baby has to be asleep.

Another common myth is that newborns must be asleep for their photo session. While it’s true that some of the most popular newborn images involve a sleeping baby, it’s not a requirement. In fact, some of the most amazing images I’ve captured have been with wide awake babies. (see image of incredibly adorable AWAKE baby attached.). Babies are naturally curious and observant, and capturing their wide-eyed wonder can result in some truly magical photos. As a Bellevue newborn photographer, I work with each baby’s natural disposition and personality to capture their unique qualities, whether they are asleep or awake.  I use a method called “baby-led posing”.  I listen to your baby and don’t force them into any position they don’t like and I’m able to capture the beauty in the natural things they want to do. Myth #3: It’s only pictures of your baby

One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that it only involves photos of the baby. In reality, newborn photography sessions are an opportunity to capture images of the whole family.  In my sessions, I encourage parents and siblings to get in on the action, creating beautiful family portraits that will be treasured for years to come. These sessions are a chance to capture the love and connection between family members during this special time in their lives.  I honestly can’t imagine doing a newborn session without at least mom and dad!!

Myth #4: The session lasts three hours minimum

Many parents are hesitant to book a newborn photography session because they believe that it will take up a large portion of their day. The truth is, the length of the session can vary depending on the photographer and the baby.  As a professional photographer serving busy Omaha moms, I work quickly and efficiently to capture a variety of images in a stress-free environment. Typically, my sessions last between one and two hours. My goal is to create a relaxed and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Myth #5: The studio needs to be hot to accommodate the baby

One of the most pervasive myths surrounding newborn photography is that the studio needs to be hot to accommodate the baby. This is simply not true. In fact, overheating the baby can be dangerous and uncomfortable for everyone involved.  As a professional Bellevue newborn photographer, I use a variety of methods to keep the baby warm, heating pads, and warm blankets. These techniques create a comfortable and cozy environment for the baby AND mom (hello hormones!) without putting anyone at risk of overheating.

Overall Bellevue newborn photography sessions are an amazing way to capture those precious moments of your baby’s first few weeks of life. Don’t let these common myths prevent you from booking a session. Remember, babies of all ages can be photographed, and the session can be tailored to include the whole family in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. If you’re looking to capture beautiful images of your newborn, contact a professional photographer who can guide you through the process and create timeless images that you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

I find it an absolute joy to photograph families during some of their most precious memories.  As a Bellevue newborn photography I get to see the most wonderful families at the very beginning of their parenting journey.  This sweet family chose me to document this special time because of the value that tangible memories provide.  Images were never intended to be lost on a hardrive.  Studies have been done to show that when your children walk by their images proudly displayed in your home, their self esteem will increase just by the presence of these incredible images.  And the better the images, the better their self esteem.
