How to do Your Hair and Makeup | Papillion Newborn Photographer

As a Papillion newborn photographer, one of the most important things I want my clients to feel during their photoshoot is confident and beautiful. While your newborn will undoubtedly steal the show, the way you present yourself in the photos can enhance the overall experience and make the images even more memorable.  Feeling your best will allow you to relax, focus on your newborn, and enjoy the moment.

Here are some tips on how to do your hair and makeup for your newborn photography session to ensure you look radiant and feel comfortable.

1. Keep It Simple and Natural

I think in the makeup world they call it “soft glam”.  Newborn photoshoots are all about capturing genuine moments of connection between you and your family. Aim for a natural, effortless style. The goal is not to look overly made-up, but rather to enhance your natural beauty.

  • Hair: Soft waves or gently tousled bun are great options for keeping things relaxed and natural. Avoid anything too dramatic like tight curls or elaborate updos unless that’s your personal style. The focus of newborn photos should be on your family’s connection, not on an over-the-top hairstyle.
  • Makeup: Keep your makeup light and fresh. Opt for neutral tones that enhance your features without overpowering them. A light foundation or tinted moisturizer will give you a flawless finish without looking too heavy. For eyes, colors that are neutral in nature but have undertones that are opposite your eye color on the color wheel.  This will make your eyes pop without being too bold. A hint of blush and soft, natural lip color will give you a radiant, dewy look — perfect for newborn photography.

2. Consider Your Skin Tone and Studio Wardrobe Outfit

Makeup should complement both your skin tone and the outfit you’ll be wearing from my extensive studio wardrobe. You want to look like yourself, just a more polished version.

  • Foundation: Choose a foundation that matches your skin tone perfectly to avoid looking washed out or too orange. Consider a lightweight foundation or BB cream for a more natural finish. If you have redness or dark circles, a light concealer can help even out your complexion.
  • Eyes and Lips: Soft, neutral eye makeup works well with any outfit. Choose a natural lip color or nude shade that ties into the softer, understated look of your overall style. You don’t want the makeup to be distracting, but rather, it should highlight your features and create a clean, polished appearance.
  • Hair and Outfit Coordination: When it comes to hair, choose a style that feels comfortable and doesn’t compete with your outfit. If you’re wearing a simple, neutral-toned dress or shirt, keeping your hair in a relaxed style like soft waves or a low, loose bun will be perfect. Avoid intricate hairstyles that may distract from your newborn or the family connection you’re looking to capture.

3. Think About Comfort

While looking good is important, comfort is key when you’re handling your newborn. If you’re uncomfortable in your hair or makeup, it will show in the photos.

  • Hair: If you’re opting for an updo, keep it relaxed. A messy bun or loose chignon can look beautiful while keeping you comfortable. If you wear your hair down, avoid heavy products that may weigh your hair down or make it look too stiff. Keep your style something you can easily manage, especially when you’re holding your newborn.
  • Makeup: Choose makeup products that are high quality but still lightweight. You don’t want your makeup to oxidize and turn orange.  Waterproof mascara is a good idea just incase the sweet moments bring you to tears!

4. Hair and Makeup Services Provided for You

One of the unique offerings I provide for my Papillion newborn photographer sessions is professional hair and makeup services.
