How to Prepare for a Family Photography Session in Lincoln

There is something that happens in the weeks before a family session. The excitement is real, but so is the quiet hum of worry underneath it. What will we wear? What if the kids won’t cooperate? What if it rains? What if I blink in every photo?

I know this feeling well. I have been photographing families throughout the greater Omaha and Lincoln area since 2017, and before that I was a mother standing exactly where you are now, trying to hold it all together long enough to get one good picture with my children. I have six daughters. I have lived every version of this experience.

So when a family comes to me, I am not just handing over a checklist. I am walking alongside them through every detail, from the very first consultation call to the moment their finished artwork goes up on the wall. That is the whole point of what I do. I want your session to feel less like a performance and more like an afternoon with your people, where the real moments get to breathe.

If you are preparing for a family photography session in Lincoln, this is everything I wish someone had told me.

Start With a Consultation, Not a Google Search

The very first thing I do with every family is get on a call together. Not to talk through packages or pricing, but to actually get to know each other. I genuinely believe this is one of the most important parts of the whole experience.

How can I photograph your family’s genuine personality if I have not met you first? Knowing how your kids move through the world, whether your spouse is the funny one or the quieter presence, what makes your family laugh, these are the details that change everything about how a session unfolds. Trust is built before we ever pick up a camera. That is not an accident. It is by design.

If you are considering booking a session with me, the experience page is a wonderful place to get a feel for how I work and what to expect from start to finish.

Wardrobe Does Not Have to Be Something You Figure Out Alone

This is, without question, the thing most families stress about the most. And it is also the thing I handle for you entirely, because you should not have to think about it at all.

My client closet is available to every family I work with. It is filled with beautifully curated, high-end pieces for moms, children, and dads in a wide range of sizes and styles. Before your session, I take into account your skin tones, hair colors, your family’s overall palette, and the aesthetic you are drawn to. Then I bring curated wardrobe selections directly to your session. You simply show up.

If you prefer to pull together your own outfits, I am happy to guide that process too. A few gentle principles that make a real difference:

  • Choose colors that feel cohesive rather than perfectly matching. Soft neutrals, warm tones, and muted hues tend to photograph beautifully together.
  • Avoid large logos, busy patterns, or anything that dates quickly. You are creating heirlooms, not a snapshot of a trend.
  • Dress in layers and textures when possible. Linen, cotton, soft knits. These fabrics move and feel natural in photographs.
  • Make sure everyone, including dad, feels genuinely comfortable. Stiff or unfamiliar clothing shows in photos, and it changes the energy of a session.

Hair and makeup matters too, and it does not need to be complicated. I recommend getting a fresh haircut a few days before, and I always have a complete style guide I can share. If you would like to add on professional hair and makeup services, I also provide curated recommendations for professional hair and makeup artists if you’d like a little extra help getting ready.

Timing Your Session Well Makes a Difference

Light matters enormously in photography, and not just in a technical way. The quality of light in the early morning or in the last hour before sunset carries a warmth and softness that cannot be replicated at midday. It is the kind of light that makes images feel like they were made to hang on a wall.

When we plan your session together, I will help you think through timing in a way that works for your family’s rhythm, especially if you have young children. Morning sessions often work beautifully for families with toddlers, who tend to be their most cooperative and brightest selves before the afternoon overtakes them. Evening sessions bring a gorgeous golden quality that many families love.

The most important thing to know is that my sessions are never rushed and never limited to the clock. I stay until we have a gallery full of images you will genuinely love. If that means we slow down for your three-year-old to warm up, we slow down. If your little one needs a few extra minutes to explore or settle in, that’s perfectly okay. Those unhurried moments often become everyone’s favorite images.

What to Do With the Kids Before the Session

I want to say this plainly, because it helps so many families arrive with a lighter heart: I have never met a child who did not eventually have a wonderful time with me. I have photographed every temperament imaginable. I’ve seen it all, and over the years I’ve learned countless playful ways to help children relax and enjoy themselves during our time together.

That said, there are a few things you can do in the days leading up to your session to set everyone up well.

Make sure your children are well rested going into session day. Tired kids and high expectations are not a great combination, so if possible, protect nap schedules the day before and the morning of.

Do not hype the session too heavily. When children sense high stakes, they feel pressure. A light, low-key mention is plenty. Something like “we are going to go hang out with a photographer and it will be fun” is far better than “you have to behave perfectly today.”

Let them bring a small comfort item if it helps them feel secure, especially for little ones. We can always set it aside once they are warmed up.

And please, let go of perfect. The photos I am most proud of are almost never the ones where every single person is looking at the camera with a staged smile. They are the ones where your daughter is mid-laugh and your husband is looking at you like he still cannot believe how good you are at all of this. Those are the images worth hanging.

Think About Where Your Images Will Live Before the Session Begins

This might seem like something to think about after your session, but it is actually one of the most valuable things you can do beforehand. Take a few minutes to walk through your home and notice where a piece of meaningful artwork could live. A stairway wall. The space above your sofa. The hallway your family passes through every single morning.

I ask about this during our consultation because it changes the way I approach the entire session. Knowing that a horizontal image will go above your bed, or that you love the idea of a gallery wall in your entryway, shapes everything. The composition, the variety of images we create, the orientation and scale of what I am working toward. It is one of the quiet ways that full service photography is different from a photo shoot where you simply walk away with files.

After your session, I will guide you through your artwork design in person. You will see studio samples, feel the quality of the handmade albums, and have help choosing something that is genuinely yours. Nothing is guesswork. Nothing is left alone for you to figure out later.

The Day of Your Session

The morning of, give yourself more time than you think you need. Rushing in with elevated stress is real, and it shows in the first few minutes of a session. Build in a cushion so you can arrive calm, dressed, and ready to actually be present with your family.

Eat a real meal. This sounds small but it is not, especially for children. A hungry toddler mid-session is a very different experience than a well-fed, happy toddler.

And finally, trust the process. My entire job is to think about every single detail so you do not have to. The location, the light, the pacing, the prompts, the wardrobe, the artwork design. All of it is handled with genuine care. Your only job on session day is to show up and be with your people.

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Photography Sessions in Lincoln

What should my family wear to a Lincoln family photography session?

The most thoughtful approach is to choose soft, coordinated colors rather than identical outfits. Neutrals, warm earth tones, and muted shades tend to work beautifully together. Avoid large logos or very busy patterns. If you would rather not think about it at all, my client closet is available to every family I work with, and I curate wardrobe selections based on your family’s specific palette, skin tones, and personal style. You simply show up.

How long does a family photography session in Lincoln last?

I do not limit sessions to a strict clock. A typical session runs somewhere in the range of thirty to sixty minutes, but I stay until we have a full gallery of images you will genuinely love. Kids set the pace, and that is exactly how I like it. If your child needs extra time to warm up, we take it. There is no pressure.

How far in advance should I book a family session?

I take a very limited number of clients each month in order to give each family the full, unhurried experience they deserve. If you have a particular season or milestone in mind, reaching out several weeks in advance is always a good idea. I also offer memberships like the Session Collective and Family Anthology for families who want to preserve memories throughout the year.

What if my children do not cooperate during the session?

I want to reassure you that I have yet to meet a child I could not connect with. I bring years of experience working with children of every age, energy level, and temperament. I use gentle play-based approaches that almost always bring even the most reluctant kids around. Your job is simply to relax. Let me handle the rest.

Do you offer in-home sessions in Lincoln?

I am available for in-home sessions upon request. I will be honest with you that the light and the overall aesthetic of in-home images will look different from what you see in my studio work. If you have fallen in love with the soft, organic quality of the images on this site, those can only be replicated in my studio environment. That said, in-home sessions can be a meaningful and beautiful addition to your family’s collection, and I am happy to discuss whether it is the right fit for your family.

What happens after the session?

After your session, we meet in person for a design appointment where I walk you through your gallery and help you choose your heirloom artwork. Your finished pieces are custom made by hand and delivered when they are complete.
