Birmingham Zoo. Who doesn’t love a zoo? Can you believe it, but I have never been to Birmingham’s zoo before. Keep in mind that they are closed on Monday and Tuesday so this activity is best enjoyed either not the weekend or later in the week. The Birmingham Zoo is one of the easiest ways to enjoy one of the many things to do in Birmingham AL with your kids since they have everything from rides to events and attractions….oh. And also animals! The animal encounters especially are such a crowd pleaser for little ones.

McWane Science Center. With an early education center and science camps McWane Science Center has really come through for the needs of parents looking for things to do in Birmingham AL with kids. Homeschool families can also rejoice. They have a whole section on their website dedicated to resources for homeschool families. I know I will be looking into the homeschool labs for my own children. What a fantastic resource!

Railroad Park is a 19 acre green space in downtown Birmingham. Things to do in Birmingham AL should definitely include this park because if you live outside the city it is just a short drive and this looks like such a fun day adventure if you want to travel during the summer but you just don’t have the bandwidth to arrange hotels and travel details. Or if you’re expecting a baby and really can’t travel by plane etc…Little boys especially will enjoy this park that celebrates the industrial heritage of this central Alabama city.

Activities for children in Birmingham AL

Southern Museum of Flight. Another activity for any parents of young boys. Airplane museums can be enjoyed by all even if you are like me and only have daughters. The history and excitement behind aviation and flight will be a great family outing for everyone. They offer tours, simulations, camps and field trips. This should definitely be on your list for things to do in Birmingham AL with kids during the year.

Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark. If this sounds unusual to you, it did to me too. But its really one of the best easy things to do in Birmingham AL that doesn’t take a whole lot of planning. I know that just parenting small children can really take up so much brain space that there is little left over to plan the details of a big outing! Sloss is a national historical landmark that you can tour with a guide or on your own and celebrates the steel and iron industry that impacted the growth of Birmingham.

Birminghams Red Mountain Park. Explore the many gorgeous trails, bring the family dog to play the dog park or let your little ones grow with the sensory trail experience. Getting outdoors is always a good idea. Don’t underestimate the value of national parks when you’re looking for great things to do in Birmingham AL with the family.
