Somewhere on your fridge or in a shared calendar, there is a color-coded grid that holds your entire household together. One of you is covering a weekend. The other has a hearing that may or may not run long. The kids have school pickups, practices, and bedtimes that refuse to move. Then someone says, “We really should get a family photo this year,” and it quietly slides to the bottom of a very long list.
I know that list well. As a mother of six daughters, and after 21 years as a military wife, I understand what it means to build a family life around a schedule that is not entirely yours. Since 2017 I have been photographing families across the Omaha and Lincoln area, and many of them live exactly this way.
I know how easily family photos can get pushed aside when work and family responsibilities take over. But the season your children are in right now, the way your family looks and feels together at these exact ages, will not come around again. Even when finding a day that works for everyone feels nearly impossible, these are the moments worth making time for. That’s why I’ve built my process to make planning your session as simple as possible, even when both of your schedules are unpredictable.
Why Is Coordinating a Family Session So Hard When Both Parents Are On Call?
When both of you work unpredictable hours, a photo session is not just one appointment. It is two calendars, a set of children’s routines, wardrobe for everyone, and a day that has to feel calm enough for your family to actually enjoy it. Any one of those pieces can shift without warning.
The good news is that the difficulty rarely comes from the photography itself. It comes from the planning. When someone else carries most of that planning for you, the whole experience becomes far simpler. That is the idea behind everything I do, and it is why the steps below begin with a conversation instead of a date.
Step One: Start Planning Early
Begin by reaching out as early as you can. I take a limited number of sessions each month, and my calendar fills quickly, so contacting me as soon as you know you want photos is the best way to give your family the most options.
Before you reach out, it helps to gather a few simple details:
- The season or milestone you have in mind, whether that is a new school year, a growing family, or simply this stage of your children’s lives
- The general stretches of time when both of you are more likely to be available
- Any times of day your children are at their best, such as bright mornings for toddlers or later afternoons for older kids
- Anything that tends to make your family’s days harder, like long drives, early wake ups, or nap schedules
You do not need to have it all figured out. That is exactly what the next step is for.
Step Two: Begin With a Consultation
Every family I work with begins with a complimentary consultation call. It is a chance for us to get to know each other and for me to learn how your household actually runs.
On that call we talk through your family’s personality, what you hope your images will feel like, and the practical details that shape your session. Timing, wardrobe, setting, and the artwork you imagine in your home all come up naturally. Getting to know your family before we ever pick up a camera helps me understand what makes you who you are and create images that feel true to you.
For families with unpredictable hours, this call is also where we talk honestly about your schedule so we can look for timing that genuinely works, rather than forcing your family into a rigid appointment slot. You can learn more about how this fits into the full process on my family photography page.
Step Three: Find a Time That Works for Your Family
When two schedules are involved, the best day is the one that gives both of you room to breathe. A session squeezed between a shift change and a hospital commute, or a deadline and a school pickup, rarely feels as relaxed as one with a little space on either side.
Here is what I encourage families to think about:
- Time of day: Light matters, and so do your children. Early morning and the last hour before sunset carry a soft, warm quality that photographs beautifully. Morning sessions often work well for toddlers, who tend to be at their brightest before the afternoon takes over.
- Margin on both sides: If you can, leave a little cushion before and after the session so no one arrives rushed or leaves in a hurry.
- Who needs to be rested: A parent coming off a long stretch of shifts will feel the difference between a calm morning and a tight turnaround. We can plan around that.
Once we have talked it through, we choose a time that suits your family’s rhythm, not just your calendar.
Step Four: Let Me Help With Wardrobe
My client closet is available to every family I photograph. It is filled with high-end, thoughtfully curated pieces for moms, dads, and children in a wide range of sizes and styles.
Before your session, I take into consideration your preferences, skin tones, hair color, and your family’s overall palette. Then I bring curated wardrobe selections directly to your session. You simply show up.
If you would rather pull together your own outfits, I am happy to guide you, and my journal has a helpful post on what to wear for a family photoshoot in Omaha. You can also add professional hair and makeup services to your session, and I can help coordinate the details so you have one less thing to worry about.
Step Five: What to Expect During Your Session
A typical family session runs around sixty minutes. I am never watching the clock, though, and I never rush a session that needs a little more time. Children set the pace, and that is exactly how I like it. If your three year old needs a few extra minutes to warm up, we take them. Those unhurried moments often become everyone’s favorite images.
I also know that for families with limited hours, an organized session matters just as much as a relaxed one. Because wardrobe, location, and flow have all been planned ahead, we spend our time on what matters most, which is the connection, the movement, and the in between moments that make your gallery feel like your family.
Step Six: Choose the Right Setting
My natural light studio is located in Omaha, Nebraska, and I welcome families from Omaha, Lincoln, Bellevue, Papillion, La Vista, Gretna, Elkhorn, and the surrounding communities. The studio offers consistent, beautiful light and full access to the client wardrobe, which makes logistics much simpler for families on tight timelines.
Outdoor sessions are also available and bring a seasonal, airy quality that many families love. In home sessions are available upon request, though I always share that the light and look of in home images will differ from the soft, organic quality of my studio work. We talk through which setting fits your family best during your consultation.
Step Seven: When Plans Change
With demanding careers, a shift may run long, or a hearing may stretch past its scheduled time. I understand this more than most. If something changes close to your session, reach out as soon as you can, and we will talk through what makes the most sense for your family.
Because we have already spoken and already know each other, that conversation is easy. You are not explaining your life to a stranger in a rushed text exchange.
What Happens After the Session?
After your session, we meet in person for a design appointment. You see your gallery alongside studio samples of albums, framed artwork, and archival prints, and I guide you through choosing the heirloom pieces that fit your home.
Everything is offered a la carte, so the choice is entirely yours. At the conclusion of the appointment, your heirloom products are ordered and custom made by hand. Nothing is left for you to figure out later, and your images are designed to live on your walls rather than on a hard drive. You can see the full details on my experience and investment page.
Planning Multiple Sessions Throughout the Year
If you would rather not coordinate a new session every time life changes, the Session Collective may be a good fit. It includes three sessions of your choice within a 12 month timeframe, along with priority booking and VIP calendar access. For households whose schedules are hard to predict, having your year mapped out in advance can make planning those memories so much easier.
If your family is also growing, my maternity and newborn sessions follow the same consultation-first approach. You can also browse more guidance in the journal, including how to prepare for a family photography session.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should we book a family session if both of us are on call?
As early as possible. I take a very limited number of sessions each month, so reaching out early gives your family the best chance of securing a session date that works with your schedule. It also gives us time to talk through your needs and plan every detail thoughtfully.
What if one of us gets called in right before the session?
Reach out as soon as you can. We will talk through what makes the most sense for your family, and because we have already connected on your consultation call, it is an easy conversation.
Do we have to plan outfits if we have no time to shop?
No. My client closet is available to every family I photograph and includes high-end wardrobe pieces for moms, dads, and children. I select options based on your preferences, skin tones, hair color, and family palette, then bring them directly to your session.
How long does a family session take?
Typically around sixty minutes, though I never work against a strict clock. Your children’s cues and your family’s needs set the pace, and I stay as long as needed to create a beautiful gallery for your family.
Can both parents attend the consultation call?
Yes. The consultation call is a conversation about your whole family, so including both of you is wonderful when your schedules allow. If only one of you can join, we will still talk through everything together and keep the other informed.
Can we do an outdoor or in-home session instead of the studio?
Yes. Outdoor sessions are available, and in-home sessions are available upon request. In home images will look different from my studio work, so we talk through the best fit during your consultation.
Is the Session Collective a good fit for a household with unpredictable schedules?
For families who want to document several milestones in a year, yes. It includes three sessions of your choice within a 12 month timeframe, along with priority booking and VIP calendar access. You can find details on my experience and investment page.
Which areas do you serve for family photography?
I welcome families from Omaha, Lincoln, Bellevue, Papillion, La Vista, Gretna, Elkhorn, and the surrounding communities. My natural light studio is located in Omaha, Nebraska.
