I’m Virginia Schultz, and I have photographed newborns for families across the Omaha metro since 2017. Then ask yourself a quieter question. Does this photographer see what I see when I look at my baby? The curl of tiny fingers against a cheek. A mother’s hands around a sleeping newborn. The first yawn. Those details disappear before you realize they are gone, and the right photographer notices them.
Experience with newborns matters
A newborn is not like any other subject. Babies in their first weeks need to be kept warm, handled gently, and given time to eat, settle and be comforted. Knowing when to pause and when to simply wait is learned over many sessions, and that patience is what makes the images feel peaceful rather than posed.
It is entirely fair to ask how long a photographer has focused on newborns and how they keep babies safe and comfortable. An experienced photographer will welcome the question.
Understand what you are really choosing
Many photographers in the area deliver a folder of digital files and consider the work finished. If that is what you want, it is a perfectly good option.
If you would rather see your newborn photographs on your walls, in an album on the coffee table, or framed beside your bed, look for a photographer who guides you through the whole experience: preparing for the session, choosing what to wear, and designing the finished pieces afterwards. In my studio that means a wardrobe for the whole family, help with every decision, and a reveal appointment where we design heirloom artwork together. The goal is photographs you live with, not files you forget about.
How to compare photographers without feeling overwhelmed
Price alone is rarely the right filter. A few better questions:
- What do they specialize in? Someone who photographs babies and families week after week will know that world well.
- What is the finished result? Digital files only, printed artwork, albums, or a combination. Ask what the total experience looks like rather than comparing session fees.
- How do they communicate before you book? A photographer who is clear and responsive now will be the same during an already full season of life.
- How do past clients describe them? Look for reviews that talk about how the family felt, how a fussy baby was handled, and whether the process felt easy from beginning to end.
Questions worth asking before you book
- How long have you focused on newborn photography?
- Do you provide a wardrobe, or should we bring outfits from home?
- How do you keep newborns calm and safe?
- What does the finished result look like: files, prints, albums, wall art?
- How long is a session, and what happens if the baby needs to eat or be comforted?
- How soon should we reserve our date?
A confident photographer will answer each of these easily, and will ask you questions in return, because they genuinely want to understand your family.
When to book
As soon as possible. Newborn sessions usually take place when your baby is around 7 to 14 days old, so the date is reserved before your baby arrives and adjusted once they do. Reserving early means one less thing to think about in those first tender days.
